Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and presentation of Canada’s outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.

STREAM 1: Maintenance Worker II with a focus on general labour
STREAM 2: Maintenance Worker II with a focus on basic carpentry work

This process is intended to fill existing vacancies but may be used to fill anticipated vacancies with the same or similar work description and language requirements, including indeterminate (permanent) and term opportunities, or in different locations.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)
EDUCATION - BOTH STREAMS:
Successful completion of secondary school or an equivalent to provincial standards.
EXPERIENCE – BOTH STREAMS:
Experience in operating canoes, boats and various types of vehicles.
Experience in the use of chain saws, bush saws, and/or other small gas powered equipment.
Experience in janitorial duties and the use of various cleaning agents and materials.
Experience in general maintenance (trails and small structures).

Information on language requirements
KNOWLEDGE - BOTH STREAMS
Knowledge of safety and work practices for operations on the water as well as remote locations.
General knowledge of basic computer programs.
KNOWLEDGE - STREAM 2 (in addition to the above):
Knowledge of the work methods and procedures used in labour, janitorial, painting and basic carpentry maintenance tasks.
Knowledge of the safe work practices including use of power tools and gas powered equipment.
General knowledge of carpentry and building science.
ABILITIES - BOTH STREAMS:
Ability to operate canoes and boats safely on lakes and rivers.
Ability to carry out normal maintenance tasks involving labour, basic carpentry and painting duties.
Ability to provide service to the public.
Ability to read and understand maps, plans, manuals and drawings.
PERSONAL SUITABILITY - BOTH STREAMS:

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Valid First Aid certificate at the standard level.
Willingness to obtain and maintain a valid PCOC (pleasure craft operators certificate).
Willingness to work in all weather conditions normally encountered from April through November in the central inland portion of Nova Scotia.
This position requires the incumbent to work in remote locations.
This position will require regular overnight stays in remote lodging.
Required to physically perform strenuous work and walk extended distances while carrying a load up to 40 kg.
Required to wear a Parks Canada uniform as per the uniform policy.
Required to wear appropriate protective clothing.
Willingness to work overtime, holidays, weekends, after hours.
Conditions of employment
Reliability Status security clearance - A security status screening is undertaken by Parks Canada for candidates who are successful in the competition. Our Human Resource team is available to answer any questions applicants may have on this process and are able to make accommodations during this process if requested.
Required to possess and maintain a valid Province of Nova Scotia Class 5 drivers license.
Will be required to undergo and pass pre-placement and periodic medical checks.
