Duties

Delivers technical and analytical services in applied science, monitoring, and active management related to a resource management program.

Work environment

Riding Mountain National Park is located in Treaty 2 Territory, the Anishinaabe homelands, where we work with the Coalition of First Nations with Interests in Riding Mountain National Park to foster positive and collaborative relationships to protect and present the natural and cultural heritage for all Canadians. Riding Mountain National Park located approximately 3.5 hours northwest of Winnipeg, protects 3,000 square kilometers of land and waters, and is home to a staggering diversity of living things.

Approximately 350,000 visitors come to Riding Mountain National Park throughout the entire year. Our dynamic and diverse staff work hard to provide our visitors with a memorable experience, whether they prefer to stay in the townsite of Wasagaming to shop and explore, or immerse themselves in nature on our pristine trails and backcountry campsites. We provide our visitors with unique and adventurous experiences in every season so there is always a reason for them to visit the park.

Intent of the process

This process will be used to staff one Resource Management Officer position in Riding Mountain National Park on a 1.0 FTE indeterminate basis. This process may also be used to create a pool of qualified candidates to staff similar position(s) with various tenures, security levels and/or language requirements.

A secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience.

Degree equivalency

• Experience planning and leading fieldwork on monitoring, research, or resource conservation programs related to aquatic ecosystems;
• Experience using a variety of aquatic data/sample collection equipment;
• Experience synthesizing scientific and technical information to provide recommendations and/or advice about natural resource management;
• Experience leading the preparation of technical/scientific reports and manuscripts, presentations, web site information, public presentations, or displays.

Graduation with a degree from a recognized educational institution with specialization related to environmental and/or natural sciences (e.g. biology, ecology, geology)

Graduation with a master’s degree from a recognized educational institution with specialization related to environmental and/or natural sciences. (e.g. biology, ecology, geology).

Degree equivalency

• Experience in carrying out projects in collaboration with Indigenous groups or Indigenous organizations;
• Experience consulting and collaborating with stakeholder groups, partner agencies and jurisdictions, Indigenous partners, and the public;
• Experience supervising, training, guiding, and monitoring the work of assigned personnel;
• Experience with any of the following phases of field research or monitoring projects: design, logistics, definition of data/sample collection requirements, data/sample analysis using statistics, and presentation of results.

• Knowledge of concepts and practices of freshwater ecology, limnology, fisheries, aquatic invasive species, and watershed management;
• Knowledge of specialized technical and aquatic and scientific equipment operation and maintenance;
• Knowledge of aquatic sampling techniques and methods.

• Ability to plan, implement, and manage complex projects (including financial management) in areas such as freshwater and aquatic invasive species monitoring and research, fisheries management, training, and Indigenous partnerships;
• Ability to follow appropriate protocols for data/sample collection and compilation, and to conduct active resource management activity;
• Ability to conduct analysis of spatial and non-spatial data using various media and software;
• Ability to prepare and present scientific reports and to communicate with a variety of audiences using a variety of techniques;
• Ability to lead and motivate staff;
• Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment.

Conditions of employment

• Possess a valid drivers license;
• Will be required to undergo and pass pre-placement and periodic medical checks;
• St. John’s Ambulance Standard First Aid Certificate (or equivalent) and CPR certificate;
• Successful completion of the Canadian Firearm Safety course;
• Valid Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL).


OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment;
• Willingness to work and/or travel in varied terrain, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation;
• Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays, when required;
• Willingness to obtain certification in the operation of various forms of ground (e.g. all-terrain vehicles) and marine (motorized and non-motorized vessels) as required.
