Duties

If you answered “yes” to these questions, the position of Interpretation Coordinator at Gulf Islands National Park Reserve may be the job for you!
As Interpretation Coordinator, you will oversee the planning and development, as well as some delivery, of interpretation programs, outreach activities, non-personal interpretation, and special events at Gulf Islands National Park Reserve. You will have the opportunity to build your own team as you hire, train, and supervise a small seasonal team of interpretation officers and students. As a supervisor and leader, your positive attitude and your ability to motivate and direct the work of others in support of a common goal is key.
In this role, you will:
- Play a lead role in the short and long term planning of the interpretation offer at Gulf Islands National Park Reserve;
- Hire, train, and supervise seasonal staff;
- Deliver, co-deliver, and/or oversee interpretation programs during the summer months;
- Develop non-personal media products (e.g. interpretive signage, self guided programs);
- Work closely with other members of the Visitor Experience department, and cross functionally within the national park reserve;
- Frequently collaborate with members of Indigenous communities, partners, stakeholders, and volunteers in the development and delivery of interpretation programs.

EDUCATION:
• Graduation from post-secondary studies (minimum of 2 year program) in a relevant discipline such as heritage interpretation, communications, education, performance arts, drama, history, tourism, marketing, OR an acceptable combination of education, training, experience or traditional knowledge relevant to position.
EXPERIENCE:
• Experience in planning, developing, delivering and evaluating interpretive and/or educational programs for a wide range of audiences using a variety of presentation techniques.
• Experience in supervising staff and leading teams (hiring, scheduling, work planning, occupational health and safety, and performance management).
• Experience developing and delivering interpretive training programs to staff, students, and/or volunteers.
• Experience in working with stakeholders and/or partners in the development and delivery of interpretive and/or outreach programs or events.
• Experience managing financial resources (e.g., developing and overseeing budgets for events and/or programs).

• Knowledge of current trends in personal and non-personal interpretive theory, techniques, planning, and evaluation.
• Knowledge of the role of interpretation relevant to delivering Parks Canada’s mandate.

ADDITIONAL ABILITY:

• Possession and maintenance of a valid class 5 Driver’s License
• Obtain and maintain valid first aid and CPR certification (training provided)
• Obtain and maintain certification in marine vessel operation (training will be provided).
OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
The position requires the incumbent to:
• Sit or stand during extended periods (75-85% of the day)
• Be exposed to variable weather conditions when moving between facilities and working outdoors
• Work/ travel in varied terrain, marine and weather conditions throughout the GINPR work area and by various means of transportation
• Operate vessels in a marine environment
• Be exposed to noxious odours from car and/or boat fumes
• Provide emergency first-response services and possess and obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR certification (provided)
• Be exposed to stress when responding to fluctuating, unpredictable visitor demands and requirements
• Supervise staff directly or through subordinate supervisors
• Wear a Parks Canada uniform and abide uniform policy
• Occasionally work shift work, and/or evenings, and/or weekends and/or statutory holidays and/or provincial/territorial holidays
