Duties

Plans, adapts, develops and delivers interpretive presentations, programs and activities to provide visitors of the parks with opportunities to discover, appreciate, learn about and enjoy the places and their natural and/or cultural resources and understand their significance to Canada.

Bruce Peninsula National Park (BPNP) and Fathom Five National Marine Park (FFNMP) are among Parks Canada’s most popular places, welcoming over 800,000 visitors each year. The Visitor Services team consists of over 20 front-line staff responsible for visitor registration and orientation, operation of day use areas and campgrounds, and providing support for many types of recreational activities.

EDUCATION:
A minimum of 2 years post-secondary education or acceptable combination of education, training, experience or traditional knowledge relevant to position

Note: Acceptable combination of education, training and experience:

A secondary school diploma AND
▪ Successful completion of a minimum of three (3) courses relevant to the duties of the position (e.g. courses taken through continuing education facilities, colleges, universities, professional or governmental organizations or employers including training provided by Indigenous elders or group that may include but are not limited to courses in heritage interpretation, natural sciences, outdoor recreation, communications, public speaking, performing arts); AND
• A minimum of 12 months experience working in the fields of education, interpretation, natural sciences, outdoor recreation, and/or outreach-communications.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
• Experience in the development and delivery of natural and/or cultural interpretive programs to a wide range of audiences using a variety of presentation techniques;
• Experience or a strong interest in developing and nurturing relationships with First Nations, Indigenous and non-indigenous groups, individuals and communities with varied backgrounds, perspectives and experiences; and
• Experience in supervision.

• Knowledge of interpretive theory and techniques such as dialogic interpretation, storytelling or guided outdoor programs;
• Knowledge of Saugeen Ojibway Nation community, culture, and history; and
• Knowledge of natural and cultural heritage specific to the site/park

Asset Qualifications:
• Experience working with Saugeen Ojibway Nation and other First Nations around Lake Huron/Georgian Bay;
• Experience in event planning;
• Experience in developing video content; and
• Experience in developing interpretive signs

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• The position requires the incumbent to:
• Work shift-work, and/or weekends, and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays
• Wear a Parks Canada uniform as per the uniform policy and/or dress in period costume as per Parks Canada requirements
• Work and/or travel in varied terrains, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation
• Perform certain physical tasks as per job requirements – lift and move various materials up to 25 pounds and stand/walk/hike for prolonged periods up to 5 hours per day
