Duties
Parks Canada is focused on protecting the natural and cultural heritage of Sable Island National Park Reserve, on carefully managing visitors who come to experience it, and on sharing the stories of this special place with Canadians.
As one of two Operations Coordinators for Parks Canada on Sable Island, you will take turns being responsible for a complex and exciting day to day operation in a very remote and adventurous site on Canada's furthest offshore island. In this role you will be coordinating access to the island by sea and by air, managing day to day logistics, and looking after the base of operations for island staff and visitors. When not on the island, you will be based in Halifax working alongside Parks Canada team members to support the operation of the island and to advance key objectives for the national park.
Sable Island has a long legacy of research that continues today. Parks Canada works collaboratively with many partners in protecting and researching this dynamic island. In your role as Operations Coordinator, you will be working closely with a variety of partners to support, manage, and facilitate exciting research and monitoring projects and you will be directly involved in various aspects of the significant fieldwork that occurs across the island.
Parks Canada welcomes a small amount of visitors to this spectacular island per year, and carefully manages these visits to ensure the protection of natural and cultural resources. As the Operations Coordinator, you will assist with detailed trip planning, meet visitors upon their arrival to provide mandatory orientation and safety briefings, share stories of the island, and facilitate exceptional visitor experiences.
You will play a leadership role as the senior Parks Canada and Government of Canada representative on the island. You will lead Parks Canada team members under your supervision, and will provide leadership and support to other island users and programs. You will have the primary role in responding to incidents and managing emergency procedures. You will be responsible for coordinating re-supply of provisions to support the remote site operation. You will also manage the remote site infrastructure and facilities, with the support of a skilled Maintenance Worker, to ensure self-sufficiency and sound environmental management at a remote location.
The role of Operations Coordinator demands innovation, collaboration, resourcefulness, technical skill, and fortitude. It also offers a great opportunity to those with a sense of adventure and a desire to find meaningful work.
Work environment
Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and presentation of Canada's outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.
The work environment for the Operations Coordinator for Sable Island National Park Reserve includes a year round position with rotating two-month remote field deployments interspersed by two-month office-based rotations in Parks Canada offices in Halifax. As a year round remote site operation, this requires two Operations Coordinators to work in rotation with a total of six months remote site deployment per position per year. On the island, the Operations Coordinator is supported at all times by a skilled Maintenance Worker and as required by other functional Parks Canada staff (ecologist, visitor experience and external relations staff, Operations Manager, Park Manager etc.).
This is an exciting opportunity where you have remote site national park work experience, but can live in the dynamic urban community of Halifax. On the island, you will live in shared accommodations provided by Parks Canada. Food is provided by Parks Canada.
Parks Canada's operation on the island is year-round, so the work involves tasks in varied terrain in all types of weather with moderate and continual physical effort. Remote site deployments include substantial time away from home and require excellent personal skills to live and work in small and integrated teams.
In addition to the base salary ($59,154 to $77,523) the Operations Coordinator also receives additional remuneration due to on-island operational requirements related to standby and overtime pay. Standby is required at all times when on the island for non-regular work hours, and is compensated at the rate of one-half hour for each 4 hour standby period. Significant overtime is required based on schedules for projects, flights, and vessel operations. When on the island, the Operations Coordinator is also under travel status (minus meal entitlements).
