The Manitoba Field Unit seeks to fill Heritage Presenter and Interpretation Coordinator positions in our Visitor Experience Team. We’re looking for candidates with a passion for customer service, and working to bring history to life! This process will be used to staff future and current vacancies in interpretation at Lower Fork Garry and the Forks National Historic Sites. We have various full time seasonal and temporary positions we anticipate hiring for 2023.

►►►STREAM 1: Heritage Presenter positions (GT-01): delivers interpretive presentations, programs and activities to visitors at Parks Canada Sites in Manitoba South. Greets and orients visitors to the services offered by Parks Canada. We’re looking for candidates with customer service skills to fill these positions.◄◄◄

►►►STREAM 2: Coordinator and Team Lead positions (PM-02): we have positions available in Historic Interpretation and Visitor Services. Positions in Interpretation plan, adapt and deliver interpretive presentations, programs and activities to visitors at the Forks National Historic Site and Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site. Positions in this stream may be asked to deliver training for other staff, supervise students and Heritage Presenters and support Occupational Health and Safety activities.◄◄◄

Work environment

A passionate, diverse group of people from a variety of functions, work together as the Manitoba Field Unit. The field unit manages seven national historic sites and one national park which are broadly dispersed throughout southern and northern Manitoba. These are: Wapusk National Park; Prince of Wales Fort National Historic Site; York Factory National Historic Site; Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site; St. Andrew’s Rectory National Historic Site; The Forks National Historic Site; Riel House National Historic Site and Linear Mounds National Historic Site. The Manitoba Field Unit south is responsible for developing and delivering programs and visitor experiences at six of these National Historic Sites. The team works collaboratively with Indigenous partners such as the Treaty One Nation, and the Manitoba Métis Federation to ensure all perspectives are considered.

Intent of the process

This process will be used to staff various positions in various tenures in the Visitor Experience South Team of the Manitoba Field Unit. Successful candidates will be expected to be available to work at Parks Canada operated sites across Manitoba South. The main work locations are St. Andrew’s, Manitoba (Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site) and Winnipeg, Manitoba (The Forks National Historic Site).

This process may be used to create a list of qualified candidates to staff similar positions with various tenures, security levels or linguistic requirements in same or other parts of the country.

A secondary school diploma or Public Service Commission approved alternatives or acceptable combination of education, training, experience or traditional knowledge relevant to position.

Note: Acceptable combination of education, training and experience:

Two years of secondary school or PSC approved alternatives;

AND

Successful completion of a minimum of one (1) course relevant to the duties of the position (e.g., courses taken through continuing education facilities, colleges, universities, professional or governmental organizations or employers including training provided by Indigenous elders or group that may include but are not limited to courses in education, tourism, recreation, leisure studies, heritage interpretation, communications, public speaking, performing arts).

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE - ALL STREAMS
• Experience delivering heritage programming and/or visitor services to groups including children, families or international visitors;
• Experience in delivering information to groups in face-to-face situations with the purpose of educating, informing, engaging, entertaining and/or motivating.

EXPERIENCE - STREAM 2
• Experience in working with stakeholders, partners and/or vendors (i.e. retail service providers, tour operators, school boards, communities and/ or Indigenous groups);
• Experience supervising staff or volunteers.

• Work shift-work, and/or weekends, and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays;
• Wear a Parks Canada uniform as per the uniform policy and/or dress in period costume as per Parks Canada requirements;
• Be available to work at various locations across Manitoba South, including the Forks National Historic Site, Riel House National Historic Site and Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site;
• Work and/or travel in varied terrains, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation;
• Stand/walk for prolonged periods while delivering tours, visitor services or interpretive programming.

Certain positions may require incumbents to
• Handle historic weapons or other types of materials;
• Wear a historic costume.
