Job Description:
As a Student Border Services Officer (SBSO) you will promote compliance with Canada's border, trade and tax legislation and regulations through responsible enforcement, quality service and education; you could intercept contraband goods, including drugs, firearms and other prohibited goods from entering Canada and be responsible for assessing duties and taxes. SBSO duties may also include applying immigration legislation, conducting interviews and exams to determine admissibility, preparing administrative reports, analysis and decision making on files/cases. Some of the duties of a SBSO may require physical exertion, and therefore applicants should be aware of the requirement to have and maintain a good level of fitness in order to successfully perform the duties of the job.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Students occupying a SBSO position are NOT armed. The Agency does not hire students for locations where Border Services Officers are armed or will be armed (e.g. land border locations); however, the Agency continues to hire students at locations where Border Services Officers are unarmed (e.g. airports and some postal operations).

Duration of employment:
The majority of the employment opportunities will be full-time from May until the end of August; however, the employment period might extend until after Labour Day. There might be a possibility of part-time re-employment during the Fall and/or Winter academic semesters for some positions.
FOR EMPLOYMENT DURING SUMMER 2013:
The CBSA may recruit students who have applied to the 2011-2012 CBSA Departmental Program of the FSWEP Campaign, or to the 2012-2013 FSWEP Campaign. The summer 2013 employment period runs from May to August 2013. Candidate assessment consists of several stages conducted over several months.
FOR EMPLOYMENT DURING SUMMER 2014:
The CBSA will recruit students who have applied to the current CBSA Departmental Program of the 2012-2013 FSWEP Campaign. Certain CBSA locations may begin assessing applicants as early as August 2013 for employment in summer 2014. Candidate assessment consists of several stages conducted over several months.

- CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
There are various Conditions of Employment (COEs) for the Student Border Services Officer position which candidates must obtain and meet PRIOR to the employment start date. Student Border Services Officers are also required to maintain the COEs, as stated below, for the entire duration of the employment period.
Candidates are responsible for independently obtaining and maintaining the following COEs at their own expense:
1. valid driver's license where required;
2. valid Standard First Aid Certification (according to the Canada Labour Code, Part II, Canada Occupational Health & Safety Regulations, Part XVI). For further information please visit the following website: http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/eng/labour/health_safety/prevention/first_aid.shtml ;
3. the Canadian Firearms Safety Course and the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course. Further information on these courses can be found on the RCMP website: http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/safe_sur/index-eng.htm .
For the following COEs, the CBSA will coordinate the appropriate administrative processes for candidates considered for employment. The successful completion and maintenance remain the responsibility of the candidate and is a condition of employment; therefore, candidates considered for employment must successfully obtain and maintain:
1. a high integrity personnel security clearance and a Secret security clearance. This includes mandatory digital fingerprints, mandatory standardized reference checks and completion of an Integrity Questionnaire. Successful candidates considered for employment will be requested to obtain digital fingerprints on their own time and at their own expense. 2. a Transportation Security Clearance for positions located at airports or marine ports (if applicable);
3. the Control and Defensive Tactics (CDT) training, which requires significant physical exertion;
4. a medical standard required to safely perform the functions of the SBSO position. A physician (from Health Canada or designated by the CBSA) will complete an Occupational Health Assessment Report which will attest to your physical ability to perform the duties of the SBSO position and participate in the required training prior to employment.
Additionally, candidates considered for employment must accept the following conditions of employment:
1. wear and maintain a uniform, the required protective and defensive equipment associated with the job as per CBSA standards;
2. work various shifts on rotation, including weekends and statutory holidays;
3. work overtime as required;
4. operate a government vehicle, where required.

Candidates may be assessed using a variety of assessment methods, such as standardized tests, written exams, an interview, reference checks, Employee Performance Evaluation Report(s) (for former SBSOs) etc. Candidate assessment consists of several stages conducted over several months.
Candidates are responsible for paying their own travel expenses incurred to attend any assessments. In addition, no relocation expenses will be reimbursed if the candidate moves as the result of an offer of student employment.
