The Student Guide Program in France is an opportunity for Canadian students to live and work in both official languages (English and French) in France for a four-month period while at the same time experiencing Canada's rich military history. The work involves giving outdoor guided tours throughout uneven battlefield terrain and underground tunnels (sometimes in adverse weather conditions) as well as working in visitor centres on site. The work lends itself to individuals who are comfortable giving presentations to the public, as well as those who are client service oriented, as they will be responding to various questions by the public with respect to the sites, attractions, and points of interest in the area. While training is provided, candidates should also be comfortable with absorbing and synthesizing large amounts of information in a short time period.
Typical tasks may include:
. giving guided tours to groups of up to 50 people in both official languages;
. answering detailed questions regarding the memorial sites, military history and about Canada.
Work location:
Canadian National Vimy Memorial and the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial, both of which are located in Northern France.
Hourly rates of pay: Students employed as Guides through this program are paid as follows: http://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/lrco-rtor/collective/lru-mnc/student-etudiants-eng.asp ** NOTE: A daily allowance of CDN $ 24.00 is paid in addition to the hourly rate of pay.
Duration of employment:
Guides are hired for full-time employment only for the duration of one of the following periods:
. January 24, 2013 to May 12, 2013*; or
. May 6, 2013 to August 19, 2013; or
. August 12, 2013 to December 2, 2013; or
. January 28, 2014 to May 13, 2014.
* Recruitment for the January to May 2013 period was completed in September 2012.
The department will conduct the majority of its recruitment by:
. December 3, 2012 (for job opportunities starting May 6, 2013 to August 19, 2013); and
. April 2, 2013 (for job opportunities starting August 12, 2013 to December 2, 2013); and
. September 16, 2013 (for job opportunities starting January 28, 2014 to May 13, 2014).

Candidates must be fully bilingual and demonstrate that they possess strong oral communication skills in both English and French. This requirement will be assessed in the interview.

Successful candidates will be required to provide copies of the following documents PRIOR to the employment start date:
1. valid First Aid Certificate;
2. valid Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation Certificate (CPR);
3. valid Canadian driver's license with no restrictions (proof must be provided at the time of job offer);
4. valid Canadian passport;
5. confirmation of current full-time student status in a recognized post-secondary institution (with Registrar's seal of proof) and attestation confirming the intent to return to school on a full-time basis subsequent to the work assignment;
6. valid French work visa as well as adequate international health insurance;
7. confirmation of meeting the eligibility criteria of the FSWEP program (consult the following website for additional information: http://jobs-emplois.gc.ca/fswep-pfete/criter-eng.htm ).
Furthermore, successful candidates:
1. are required to meet the necessary security standard in order to obtain and maintain a valid Enhanced Security clearance;
2. are required to wear and maintain a uniform;
3. must be willing to work variable schedules (including shift work, weekends, statutory holidays and overtime);
4. must be willing to operate a government vehicle, sometimes with passengers, as required;
5. may be asked to provide a letter of reference from persons not related to the candidate.
Successful candidates who choose to live in the shared housing provided by Veterans Affairs Canada must sign a Rental Agreement and agree to have the monthly rental sum of 200 Euros deducted from their pay cheques on a bi-weekly basis.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
1. All successful candidates must make and pay for their own travel arrangements.
2. Upon completion of the work assignment, guides may be eligible for a partial reimbursement of their actual airfare costs (up to CDN $600.00).
3. Students who were previously employed through the Student Guide Program in France may be called back to work as a guide (these students are required to have an active application in the current FSWEP campaign).
4. The re-employment of students for subsequent work terms (either as a Guide, Call-back Guide, or Senior Guide) is not guaranteed, and is strictly based on: (1) the operational requirements of the Program as determined by Veterans Affairs Canada, and; (2) each student's job performance as evaluated by Veterans Affairs Canada during a previous work term(s).
