The Student Guide Program in France is an opportunity for Canadian students to live and work in both official languages (English and French) in France for a four-month period while at the same time experiencing Canada's rich military history. The work involves giving outdoor guided tours throughout uneven battlefield terrain and underground tunnels (sometimes in adverse weather conditions) as well as working in visitor centres on site. The work lends itself to individuals who are comfortable giving presentations to the public, as well as those who are client service oriented, as they will be responding to various questions by the public with respect to the sites, attractions, and points of interest in the area. While training is provided, candidates should also be comfortable with absorbing and synthesizing large amounts of information in a short time period.

Typical tasks may include:
. giving guided tours to groups of up to 50 people in both official languages;
. answering detailed questions regarding the memorial sites, military history and about Canada.

Work location:

Canadian National Vimy Memorial and the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial, both of which are located in Northern France.

Hourly rates of pay: Students employed as Guides through this program are paid as follows: http://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/lrco-rtor/collective/lru-mnc/student-etudiants-eng.asp ** NOTE: A daily allowance of CDN $ 24.00 is paid in addition to the hourly rate of pay.

Duration of employment: Guides are hired for full-time employment only for the duration of one of the following periods:
. January 24, 2013 to May 12, 2013*; or
. May 6, 2013 to August 19, 2013; or
. August 12, 2013 to December 2, 2013; or
. January 28, 2014 to May 13, 2014.

* Recruitment for the January to May 2013 period was completed in September 2012.

The department will conduct the majority of its recruitment by:
. December 3, 2012 (for job opportunities starting May 6, 2013 to August 19, 2013); and
. April 2, 2013 (for job opportunities starting August 12, 2013 to December 2, 2013); and
. September 16, 2013 (for job opportunities starting January 28, 2014 to May 13, 2014).
