Great Lakes Area Summer Science Student Program

Job Description: Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is responsible for the development and implementation of policies and programs in support of Canada's scientific, ecological, social and economic interests in oceans and fresh waters. DFO is a national and international leader in the management of oceans and freshwater resources. As a sustainable development department, DFO integrates environment, economic and social perspectives to ensure Canada's oceans and freshwater resources benefit this generation and those to come. In the Great Lakes basin, the department is represented by many sectors including Science. It is the Science sector (through both the Sea Lamprey Control Centre and the Great Lakes Lab for Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences) that carries out the department's mission to provide sound scientific advice to both internal and external clients.

Students work in teams with DFO staff to collect, process, analyze, provide operational support and report on fisheries related operations. Generally students are engaged in field and lab work but may also be involved with computer and office work.

Typical tasks may include:
. collecting biological samples/information from candidate lakes and rivers.
. sampling water, sediment, benthic invertebrates, zooplankton, and fishes.
. assessing the chemical, physical and biological nature of Great Lakes tributaries for sea lamprey management.
. collecting habitat and species information to assess the status of Federal Species at Risk and of Aquatic Invasive Species.

Work location:

Sault Ste. Marie (Ontario)

This program is administered from Sault Ste. Marie (Ontario). However, a student may not necessarily be working in Sault Ste. Marie but may be assigned to one of the various work locations in the Great Lakes basin.

Duration of employment: Students are hired for full-time employment from May 6 to August 30, 2013. There are no part-time opportunities within or outside of this timeframe.
