Job Description: Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is responsible for the development and implementation of policies and programs in support of Canada's scientific, ecological, social and economic interests in oceans and fresh waters. DFO is a national and international leader in the management of oceans and freshwater resources. As a sustainable development department, DFO integrates environment, economic and social perspectives to ensure Canada's oceans and freshwater resources benefit this generation and those to come. In the Great Lakes basin, the department is represented by many sectors including Science. It is the Science sector (through both the Sea Lamprey Control Centre and the Great Lakes Lab for Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences) that carries out the department's mission to provide sound scientific advice to both internal and external clients.

Students work in teams with DFO staff to collect, process, analyze, provide operational support and report on fisheries related operations. Generally students are engaged in field and lab work but may also be involved with computer and office work.

Typical tasks may include:
. collecting biological samples/information from candidate lakes and rivers.
. sampling water, sediment, benthic invertebrates, zooplankton, and fishes.
. assessing the chemical, physical and biological nature of Great Lakes tributaries for sea lamprey management.
. collecting habitat and species information to assess the status of Federal Species at Risk and of Aquatic Invasive Species.

Work location:

Sault Ste. Marie (Ontario)

This program is administered from Sault Ste. Marie (Ontario). However, a student may not necessarily be working in Sault Ste. Marie but may be assigned to one of the various work locations in the Great Lakes basin.

Duration of employment: Students are hired for full-time employment from May 6 to August 30, 2013. There are no part-time opportunities within or outside of this timeframe.

• CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  
  All successful candidates must:
  
  1- possess, at time of application, a valid Canadian driver's license (minimum Ontario G2 or equivalent) with a good driving record; must also be willing to drive a Government of Canada vehicle;
  2- possess a valid Pleasure Craft Operator's Card;
  3- pass a Health Canada approved physical exam (which will be coordinated by DFO);
  4- meet the necessary security standard (National Security Investigation) in order to obtain a valid Enhanced Security clearance;
  5- be willing and able to travel to, and work in, the United States; therefore some positions may require a U.S. work visa.
  
  ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
  
  1- About the hourly rates of pay: Students are paid using the Student Rates of Pay, as established by the Treasury Board: http://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/lrco-rtor/collective/lru-mnc/student-etudiants-eng.asp . Organizations have delegated authority to offer students a salary within a salary range for a particular academic level.
  
  New students to our program are paid at the Step 1 level regardless of education level. Returning students to our program are paid at the Step 2 level if it is their 2nd year with us, Step 3 if it is their 3rd year with us, etc.
  
  2- About training: For certain positions, students may be required to undergo training*, for some or all of the following requirements:
  
  . general understanding of fisheries sampling techniques such as electro fishing, gillnets, trap nets, and seining;
  . general understanding of laboratory practices and safety including sample processing (e.g. fishes, macro-invertebrates, water);
  . Class 2 electro fishing certificate;
  . Marine Emergency Duties - Level A3;
  . Defensive Driver Training;
  . Small Vessel Operator Proficiency Training - Transport Canada Certification;
  . Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) certification.

  During the first 2-4 weeks of the program, students undergo training in either Sault Ste. Marie (Ontario) or Burlington (Ontario) as determined by DFO. Students are expected to cover their own relocation and living costs during the training period.
  
  3- Additionally, for certain positions, students must be:
  . willing and able to work in adverse field conditions;
  . comfortable travelling for extended periods of time to complete field research projects.
  
  Also, students are expected to cover their own relocation and living costs when required to be in the office or laboratory.
  
  Most of the student positions require large amounts of field work which involves travel and living in hotels/motels/other accommodation, arranged and paid for by DFO. Meal expenses are also paid by DFO.
